AIA boasts more members than ever before in it’s long history and now has 7 international chapters dedicated to furthering the art of architecture. He will actually be the first practicing architect to receive the prestigious award, and with such as an astounding educational and architectural career, there’s really no other Mississippian like Robert Ivy. He was educated at the University of the South to receive an English degree, and then pursued a Master of Architecture at Tulane University. While there he received accolades from the national fraternity for architecture for being able to aptly communicate the importance of design. When he received the designation of Master Architect, he became one of only seven in the century long history of the fraternity and the only architect to receive the title since 2000. Robert Ivy started his college career at Sewanee: The University of the South. At this school he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in English. Then he went to Tulane University where he obtained a masters of Architecture.
Robert Ivy went to work for McGraw-Hill Construction where he held a vice president position. During this time he was also the editor of Architectural record where he oversaw the printing of many publications. His goal during his career here was to be a spokesperson for political and environmental issues. The magazine won several awards while he was the editor including twenty six Jesse H. Neal Awards. The magazine also won recognition from the American Society of Magazine Editors.
Currently Robert Ivy works for the American Institute of Architects. Here he works with others to help create a great environment of buildings. He is very involved in helping architects address certain issues such as sustainability and climate change.
Robert Ivy has received many awards throughout his many years working in architecture. In 1998 he received an award for his great management skills. The award that he won was called the Mcgraw-Hill Award. In 2009 he received the Crain Award. This is the biggest individual recognition in the field of American Business media. In 2010 the national architecture fraternity called Alpha Rho Chi named Robert Ivy Master Architect. He is the only architect in the 21st century that this fraternity has selected to be a Master Architect. He is one of only seven people that this fraternity has given this honor.
Not only is Robert A. Ivy a great Chief Executive Officer of the American Institute of Architects but he is also a published author. In 2001 he published a biography of Fay Jones called “Fay Jones: Architect.” This book is currently in its third edition. This book talks about Fay Jones who was an apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright. It also talks about how architecture is very meaningful in people’s everyday lives.
